James Wilson, Artist/Sculptor

James is a contemporary en plein-air artist whose passion for life and art are seen in his colorful canvases. Painting outdoors with oils or pastels is a challenge that enables him to capture the colors in light and shade. Living in Ventura, California enables him to paint landscapes from the coast to the mountain back country.

"Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to paint, where colors come to life," he says. "Most people don't see these colors day to day." His paintings let viewers see those colors captured in a moment of time.

James is also an accomplished stone sculptor. Carving in marble, he has created abstract figures, a hint that lets the viewer guess. Using drawings or maquettes, a simple visual such as a dance or a kiss brings forth ideas for his sculpture.

James received his Masters in Fine Arts in 1974 from Cal State University Long Beach. He has participated in juried and small group shows throughout California and Arizona and has won several awards. His paintings and sculptures are in private collections in several states.

Workshops in Arizona with Bonnie Casey and Tom Talbot and in California with Glenna Hartman and Bert Collins.
